PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Pirates broadcaster Steve Blass joined Tab Douglas Saturday morning on Bucco Talk. Blass talked about the removal of Jason Grilli from the closer role on Friday. Blass noticed that Grilli was elevating his pitches, and believes that he will be able to turn things around.

“I think Jason Grilli’s going to be fine, I really do. And I’m not whistling in the dark. I think if he gets the ball downstairs, he’s going to be effective,” Blass said. “He knows how to pitch, he knows how to handle the ninth inning. I expect him to be back in that role, I really do.”

Blass pointed out that the script has been flipped from last year, when offense was a problem.

“I think we’re scoring enough runs. It’s so ironic that this year our offense is better than our pitching, especially our bullpen, which has really struggled. Last year our bullpen was lights out and we wanted more offense, so you never know what you’re going to need,” Blass said.

Blass and Douglas also discussed the “Buster Posey Rule” regarding collisions at home plate. Blass is not a fan.

“It’s really worked pretty well for a hundred years. I know you don’t want to get people hurt. But I’m sorry, that’s part of the game,” Blass said. “There’s situations where you can get hurt all around the field. I think it’s done for economic reasons. I don’t think it was broke. I think they’re trying to sanitize our game a little bit.”
